CREATURE TEST

I had a lot of fun with this shot, but the creature’s unusual anatomy made its movement a real challenge. It has the body mechanics of a quadruped and the features of a bird, so I studied dogs, cats, and pigeons and combined those references into a walk that felt right for this particular creature. I also incorporated a pigeon-like back-and-forth head movement to bring out its bird-like character.
Beyond making the gait believable, I wanted the creature to have a personality. I pushed its body mechanics into distinct, expressive poses, then worked carefully on the transitions so the movement flowed naturally between them. The goal was for each shift in posture to reveal something about the creature, rather than simply move it from one position to the next.

The tail was the toughest technical part: it needed to move fluidly with the body without feeling mechanically attached. I wrote a Python script that gave me finer control over its motion and made it easier to switch between FK and IK during the shot. I was responsible for the animation, lighting, and rendering; I animated and lit the shot in Maya and rendered it in Arnold.
